At Trinity, worship is a verb not a noun.
Our goal and standard for worship at Trinity: Trinity’s “Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the triune God. In worship the people of God acknowledge God present in the world and in their lives. As they respond to God’s claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ, believers are transformed and renewed. In worship the faithful offer themselves to God and are equipped for God’s service in the world.” (Book of Order, W-1.1000)
At both worship services we understand worship to be at God’s initiative: “The Spirit of God quickens people to an awareness of God’s grace and claim upon their lives. The Spirit moves them to respond by naming and calling upon God, by remembering and proclaiming God’s acts of self-revelation in word and deed, and by committing their lives to God’s reign in the world.” (Book of Order, W – 1.1002)
Jesus Christ, our risen Lord and Savior and the revealed Word of God is the focus of all worship. Our response to God’s initiative and the real presence of Jesus Christ in our midst is: “to call God by name, invoke God’s presence, beseech God in prayer, and stand before God in silence and contemplation. [We] bow before God, lift hands and voices in praise, sing, make music, and dance. Heart, soul, strength, and mind, with one accord, [we] join in the language, drama, and pageantry of worship.” (Book of Order, W- 1.2001)
The three focal points in worship are: the pulpit as the place of the Word of God proclaimed; the filled baptismal font as the place of being signed and sealed and incorporated into Christ; and the Table where we monthly celebrate the Lord’s Supper by eating and drinking in communion with the crucified and risen Lord.
During our summer months we celebrate our single worship service in which the whole community of faith gathers as one Body at 9:30a.m. During fall, winter, and spring we offer two expressions of worship: a traditional Reformed service at 9:30a.m. and a Celebration service at 11:30a.m. Because music is our response which engages the whole self in prayer, we have two choirs and a handbell choir. The Heritage Choir, directed by Dr. Lee Snook and accompanied by Sheryl Daniels on the organ leads us in our traditional service. The Celebration Team, directed by Carmen Raines, leads us in our celebration worship.
Worship design and planning is the responsibility of our Worship Planning Team. This group of lay leaders meets monthly with the pastor to study scripture, discuss the theme of worship, and develop elements of worship which give unified, creative, and diverse expression to proclamation of God’s Word. Through the efforts of this Team, Trinity’s worship remains faithful to our Reformed traditions by interpreting them into today’s context.
Our Session Worship Committee works with the pastor and the Worship Planning Team to insure the logistics and details of worship and to supplement the ideas of the Planning Team esthetically. Special services in addition to regular Sunday morning worship include: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, and occasional prayer and meditation services.
We welcome our children and youth in worship and encourage them to offer their gifts of participation, leadership, and responsiveness. On non-Communion Sundays, we usually set aside time in worship for a children and youth message. For babies and children through the age of five years, we offer a nursery if parents desire.
