Matthew 19:16-24
Then someone
came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal
life?” And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There
is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the
commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?“ And Jesus said, “You shall
not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You
shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother; also, You
shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I
have kept all these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you
wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the
poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When
the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many
possessions.
Then Jesus said to his disciples,
“Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the
kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the
kingdom of God.”

part with their wealth, they are not following Christ) |

Malachi 3:8-10
Will anyone rob God? Yet you are
robbing me! But you say, “How are we robbing you?” In your tithes and
offerings! You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me—the whole
nation of you! Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there
may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of
hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour
down for you an overflowing blessing.

James 5:1-6
Come now, you rich people, weep and
wail for the miseries that are coming to you. Your riches have rotted,
and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and
their rust will be evidence against you, and it will eat your flesh like
fire. You have laid up treasure for the last days. Listen! The wages of
the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry
out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord
of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you
have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and
murdered the righteous one, who does not resist you.

1 Timothy 6:6-10
Of course, there is great gain in
godliness combined with contentment; for we brought nothing into the
world, so that we can take nothing out of it; but if we have food and
clothing, we will be content with these. But those who want to be rich
fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful
desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of
money is a root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich
some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many
pains.

Philippians 4:10-13
I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now
at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned
for me, but had no opportunity to show it. Not that I am referring to
being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I
know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In
any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed
and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all
things through him who strengthens me.

And in
this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began
last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something—
now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing
it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is
acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not
have.

2
Corinthians 8:1-9
We want
you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been
granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of
affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed
in a wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they
voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means,
begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to
the saints—and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves
first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, so that we might urge
Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should also
complete this generous undertaking among you.
Now as
you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost
eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this
generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing
the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you
know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich,
yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might
become rich.
(Paul commends the Macedonian churches for their spontaneous,
generous giving, in spite of their limited means) |

Mark 12:41-44
He sat down opposite

Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two
small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his
disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put
in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of
them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty
has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Luke

Then he

thought to himself, ’What should I do, for I have no place to store my

build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And
I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many
years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool!
This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you
have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up
treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”

praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right
hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father
who sees in secret will reward you.”

Deuteronomy 15:7-10
If there is among you anyone in need, a
member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the
Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted
toward your needy neighbor. You should rather open your hand, willingly
lending enough to meet the need, whatever it may be. Be careful that you
do not entertain a mean thought, thinking, “The seventh year, the year
of remission, is near,” and therefore view your needy neighbor with
hostility and give nothing; your neighbor might cry to the Lord against
you, and you would incur guilt. Give liberally and be ungrudging when
you do so, for on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all
your work and in all that you undertake.

abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy
name comes from your hand and is all your own. I know, my God, that you
search the heart, and take pleasure in uprightness; in the uprightness
of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen

1 Kings 17:7-16
But after a
while the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
Then the word
of the Lord came to him, saying, “Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to
Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”
So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the
town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said,
“Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.“ As she was
going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of
bread in your hand.” But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have
nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a
jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and
prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” Elijah
said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first
make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make
something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord the God of
Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not
fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.” She went and
did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for
many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil
fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

So, whether you eat
or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.

as in everything we do, should be done for God's glory) |

Leviticus
22:17-22,29
The Lord
spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to Aaron and his sons and all the people
of Israel and say to them: When anyone of the house of Israel or of the
aliens residing in Israel presents an offering, whether in payment of a
vow or as a freewill offering that is offered to the Lord as a burnt
offering, to be acceptable in your behalf it shall be a male without
blemish, of the cattle or the sheep or the goats. You shall not offer
anything that has a blemish, for it will not be acceptable in your
behalf. When anyone offers a sacrifice of well-being to the Lord, in
fulfillment of a vow or as a freewill offering, from the herd or from
the flock, to be acceptable it must be perfect; there shall be no
blemish in it. Anything blind, or injured, or maimed, or having a
discharge or an itch or scabs—these you shall not offer to the Lord or
put any of them on the altar as offerings by fire to the Lord. When you
sacrifice a thanksgiving offering to the Lord, you shall sacrifice it so
that it may be acceptable in your behalf.
(God deserves only the best of what we
have to offer) |

Genesis
28:16-22
Then
Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this
place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome
is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the
gate of heaven.” So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the
stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and
poured oil on the top of it. He called that place Bethel; but the name
of the city was Luz at the first. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God
will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give
me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my
father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God, and this stone,
which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that
you give me I will surely give one tenth to you.”
(Jacob realized that all belongs to God,
and used his tithe as a means of worship) |
