Matthew 19:16-24
Then someone came to
him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”
And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only
one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You
shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false
witness; Honor your father and mother; also, You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “I have kept all
these; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be
perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When the young
man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
Then Jesus said to
his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to
enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel
to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter
the kingdom of God.”
(if the
rich cannot part with their wealth, they are not following Christ) |

Matthew

Ecclesiastes

Trinity Presbyterian Church

Malachi 3:8-10
Will anyone rob God?
Yet you are robbing me! But you say, “How are we robbing you?” In your
tithes and offerings! You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing
me—the whole nation of you! Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so
that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says
the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you
and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.
(refusal
to tithe is robbing God; tithing will cause Him to bless the givers) |

Nehemiah 10:37-39
and to bring the
first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the
wine and the oil, to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our
God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our soil, for it is the
Levites who collect the tithes in all our rural towns. And the priest,
the descendant of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites
receive the tithes; and the Levites shall bring up a tithe of the tithes
to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse. For the
people of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the contribution of
grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms where the vessels of the
sanctuary are, and where the priests that minister, and the gatekeepers
and the singers are. We will not neglect the house of our God.

a tithe of all the yield of your seed that is brought in yearly from the
field. In the presence of the Lord your God, in the place that he will
choose as a dwelling for his name, you shall eat the tithe of your
grain, your wine, and your oil, as well as the firstlings of your herd
and flock, so that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.

1 Timothy
6:18,19
They are

James
5:1-6
Come now,
you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are coming to you.
Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-eaten. Your gold and
silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you, and it
will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure for the last
days. Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you
kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have
reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in
luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of
slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who does
not resist you.
(wealth distorts our values and
lifestyles) |

steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Now
it is not necessary for me to write you about the ministry to the
saints, for I know your eagerness, which is the subject of my boasting
about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready
since last year; and your zeal has stirred up most of them.

1 Timothy
6:6-10
Of
course, there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment; for
we brought nothing into the world, so that we can take nothing out of
it; but if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. But
those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many
senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and
destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and
in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and
pierced themselves with many pains.

Philippians 4:10-13
I rejoice
in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for
me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show
it. Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be
content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I
know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have
learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having
plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who
strengthens me.
(Paul was content in all situations, with
whatever he had) |

Corinthians 8:10-12
And in
this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began
last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something—
now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing
it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is
acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not
have.
(God blesses those who give with an "eager
willingness") |

2 Corinthians 8:1-9
We want you to know, brothers and
sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the
churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction,
their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a
wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they
voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their
means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this
ministry to the saints— and this, not merely as we expected; they
gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, so
that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning,
so he should also complete this generous undertaking among you.
Now as you excel in everything—in
faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love
for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I
do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of
your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the
generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet
for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might
become rich.
(Paul commends the Macedonian
churches for their spontaneous,
generous giving, in spite of their
limited means) |

Luke
12:16-21
Then he
told them a parable: “The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he
thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my
crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and
build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And
I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many
years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool!
This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you
have prepared, whose will they be?’ So it is with those who store up
treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”
(the rich cannot buy God’s favor;
recognize material good for what they are) |

Mark
12:41-44
He sat
down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the
treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put
in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his
disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put
in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of
them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty
has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
(the poor widow gave two coins) |

the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by
others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you
give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

secret will reward you.

Deuteronomy 15:7-10
If there is among
you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns
within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be
hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbor. You should
rather open your hand, willingly lending enough to meet the need,
whatever it may be. Be careful that you do not entertain a mean thought,
thinking, “The seventh year, the year of remission, is near,” and
therefore view your needy neighbor with hostility and give nothing; your
neighbor might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt.
Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the
Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you
undertake.

Faithful Stewards
By
God’s amazing grace, we’re receivers and givers. To each of us God
says: "Give your lives to me. Be my faithful stewards and servant
church. Be my non-timid and visionary people and I will bring forth
from you the ministries to which you are called in Christ’s name." Did
you know that it is budgeted to cost $8,427 each week to operate Trinity
Presbyterian Church in 2007? We’re grateful for pledgers who follow
God’s call. |
